Watching Venezuela from afar can be frustrating. You feel you should do something, but you don’t know what that something might be. If, like me, you’re looking for something concrete, immediate and real you can do right now to make a difference, try this: support Efecto Cocuyo.
Launched by two tough, award–winning Caracas journalists – Luz Mely Reyes and friend-of-the-blog Laura Weffer – Efecto Cocuyo is the most serious attempt yet to explore the potential of the web to support quality independent Venezuelan journalism in the age of Communicational Hegemony.
Efecto Cocuyo is the real thing. No girls-in-bikinis, no clickbait, no Miami-based ranting: real independent journalism by real reporters working in extraordinarily adverse circumstances. They’re the real thing.
And they deserve our support.
If you have more money than time, click here and send them $50. (Or, better yet, quit messing around and send them $5,000.)
If you have more time than money, grab pencil and paper and take the next few minutes to try to think of three people who could contribute them, then send each of them this link along with a personal, heartfelt plea for a contribution.
They’re up to $3,100 raised as I post this. But they need a lot more than that. $75,000 for 2015. If we all pitch in, we can get them there.
It’s time the Venezuelan diaspora stepped up to the plate. Enough complaining. Let’s do something. Let’s do this.
Great idea, Francisco.
Glad to see brave journalists in defence of free speech, no matter the consequences.

Wholeheartedly agree! Let’s cough up some cash, foks. Quality independent journalism in Venezuela is as rare as hen’s teeth. Don’t let this great initiative falter!

We should sponsor safe places, such as these, where we can discuss without censorship!

Thank you Francisco for sharing that. Sitting here in Oklahoma, USA I feel helpless sometimes when I see what is happening to the country of my adopted family and my best friend. Even if it a tiny little bit, I am proud to help.

Speaking of press coverage, the Miami Herald has an article about the shameful silence of Latin American organizations re the recent arrest of the Mayor of Caracas. It refers to these organizations as mutual protection associations of repressive regimes. http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/news-columns-blogs/andres-oppenheimer/article10886603.html

Just followed these 2 journos on twitter to see what I would be paying for in this entrepreneurial journalism, evidently well marketed.

If a group of christians set up a discussion group to discuss religious subjects then they can set a rule which limit the access of muslims or atheists to that group because quite frankly they are not interested in the opinions muslims may have of christianity . Freedom of opinion can be limited by another freedom , the freedom of association , where like thinking people create a forum to discuss from the point of view of their shared view different subjects . A blog can be a kind of informal association where certain latitude can be shown to the opinions of people who dont share the basic views of people who form part of that association but where nonetheless the intervention of people antagonistic to those views cannot go as far as using the forum to sabotage the discussions of the association members or insult their persons and beliefs .
This topic is explored brilliantly by Hannah Arendt in her 1959 essay on Little Rock . CC is not a political institution instead its participants form a kind of private association .

Tis true. Muslims have no business talking to us about Leopoldo Lopez.

I contributed US$1,000 to Cocuyo. Do not know much about them, but I trust Francisco Toro. I have also donated, without any fundraising in between, to CaracasChronicle.
I love a free press and I know it is not free. It nourishes me as much as Kale salad and outdoor exercise. It is fair that we pay for what we love. Go on and donate TODAY.
