The latest official number of inmates killed by intoxication (combination of drugs and alcohol) earlier this week in Uribana Prison has reached 35, with another 20 in critical condition.
But even if the state insists with pushing its version of the story, putting the blame on the inmates themselves, the Public Ministry formally asked for the arrest of the recently appointed warden Julio César Pérez, who was front and center of this crisis. Pérez was detained yesterday by the SEBIN intelligence services, and is expected to be arraigned in the next few hours.
As multiple calls from both home and abroad have called for a full inquiry on these terrible events, the central government is trying to please to keep up with these requests. This crisis is far from over.

I wonder what’s bubbling in the mind of the Minister of Penitentiaries, the despicable Iris. On the same day of the tragedy she openly backed Pérez and upheld his actions to “do away with privileges that some inmates had…”.
