Press and Chain

Imagen1Freedom House just released its Freedom of the Press 2014 report. The tittle: “Press Freedom at the Lowest Level in a Decade”. And Venezuela is leading the race to the bottom.

Venezuela’s country report draft states:

“Under the new government of Nicolás Maduro, who was elected to succeed Chávez in April, patterns of excessive government involvement in the affairs of the private press grew worse. Maduro’s administration hampered the opposition media by arbitrarily fining outlets, enforcing licensing requirements without respecting due process rights, and excluding certain outlets from access to public information. High-level government officials constantly demonized opposition-aligned outlets and exerted systematic pressure on the tone and content of reporting”.

We debunked the myth freedom of speech in Venezuela over a month ago. At that time we said that “the current reality seems to indicate that mass media is allowed to freely transmit information, as long as that information is favorable to the government. In other words, Venezuelans are able to express themselves and share their opinions as long as they are willing to pay the price that an opinion against the government can entail. Nicolás Maduro’s statements about “freedom” of speech are clearly misleading”.

Freedom House was more categorical about it. With a score of 78 out of 100 -the lower the score, the better the press freedom status- Venezuela’s press is “Not Free”.

  1. Of course Venezuela does not have much freedom of press! This shouldn’t even be a discussion at this point.

But Freedom of the press, as are other realities, a highly nuanced theme.

I would say that no country has real freedom of press, and no country without freedom can be said to never have some freedom. Some of this depends on the willingness of an individual to risk himself.

People use the exceptions of a more nuanced reality rather than the generalities to claim what is simply not true. And then there will be people who will argue the exceptions ad nauseum, wasting other people’s time.

Discussing the different ways in which a lack of freedom is created in Venezuelan society would be a fascinating topic of conversation.

  2. Here is one very important reason, quite common everywhere, but out of control in some places like Venezuela:

“Groupthink, a term coined by social psychologist Irving Janis (1972), occurs when a group makes faulty decisions because group pressures lead to a deterioration of “mental efficiency, reality testing, and moral judgment” . Groups affected by groupthink ignore alternatives and tend to take irrational actions that dehumanize other groups. A group is especially vulnerable to groupthink when its members are similar in background, when the group is insulated from outside opinions, and when there are no clear rules for decision making.”

Extorres is correct. I was asking Anabella&Barbara about their attempt to buy dollars through Sicad-2.
I just read an update to their article where they say they have received the dollars. Is it possible the government knows about them writing an article and made sure the dollars were moved quickly?

      • And when I say not allowed, I don’t always mean as in not allowed by established laws, but also as in peer pressure or groupthink, and in the available outlets.Popularity sells.

To overcome this we must be willing to take a personal risk.

This in turn opens up the question of how much a particular ethnic group or individual is willing or unwilling to stand alone, and take the heat.Values such as shame vs guilt motivations come very much into play here.

  4. I don’t see why we’re to be upset about this, after all we’re in great company:

Russia, China, Iran, most of Asia and half of Africa.

That’s a great group to rub elbows with!

  5. It’s not only that there is a lack of freedom of press, but also the fact that it goes along with government owned media being full time propaganda machines.

    • Another great point. There are movements and people who as a group that think lies are good if they get them where they are going vs others who are called on their lies by people of the same ideology -Therefore the playing field is never level.

When there’s a “price to pay” for an opinion against the government, then there’s no freedom of speech.

  7. The govt cannot tolerate a free press because its basic dogmatic stance is that it holds a sacred formula which protects them from ever making any mistakes or incurring in any failures , so that any media report of their mistakes amounts to an infuriating act of sacrilege . They are infallible and incapable of failure because Socialism and the ideals of the Dear Defunct Leader are guaranteed to always lead to perfect results.. Their ideals make them Omnipotent and All Knowing and absolutely benevolent so any report of failure or corruption has to be maliciously false .

While in house they know that theyve failed miserably in their governance , they cannot let their followers learn that their sacred ideals are in any way flawed .!! That makes a free press or generally freedom of information impossible !!

As noted before they also practice a form of primitive form of magical thinking that makes them feel that appearances substitute for reality , that if they fake and manipulate information and silence certain facts that misrepresented ‘reality’ is actually a true representation of reality !!
