U.S. Imposes World’s Limpest Sanction on Iran Embargo-Running PDVSA

Setty has all the background here and here.

PDVSA is getting off with a slap on the wrist – they’re mostly barred from doing stuff they haven’t done for years, had no intention of doing, and had no interest in (like getting gringo government procurement contracts – and even then, Citgo is still able to.)

Still, it’s official: the Venezuelan State is now under official U.S. government sanctions. Expect rhetorical fire and brimstone.

  2. the Pentagon embargoed Venezuela back in ’05 becomming official in 2006 on Arms and Parts and those sanctions had teeth and bite. Today Bolivarian FANs capabilities and readiness are much worse as a result.

  4. When they steal the elections? When they start shooting people around Caracas? You mean they haven’t done it or the “gringos” haven’t seen it happen?

  5. The Revolution efforts in establishing a warm, trusting relationship with the prime PAYING client for its oil exports are yielding… a hellish fruit.

I wonder, which one can stand it for longer… Venezuela without selling it’s dwindling oil production to the U.S., or the U.S. without Venezuelan oil. Let’s not mention Venezuelan imports of a lot of things that Venezuela does no longer produce.

As with everything else, I gather that the “gringos” need not commit a single popgun to Venezuela. Or act. Huguito does all that is needed to run PDVSA into the ground, build a case against himself and ensure that his head will fall if ever the U.S. enacts real sanctions for a week.

  6. Chavismo spits hand that feeds them, will continue being fed by it. Typical.

OT: The fact that Richard Peñalver got shot today for a traffic accident. Oh, delicious irony.

  7. Not to appear Polyannaish, but I find encouraging that so far the govt. seems to be only ones keen on playing this up while the opposition is studiously shrugging it off if not ignoring it. Even El Ciudadano is explicitly playing it down. Somehow the opposition is managing to stay on message. Not exactly what we would have seen a few years ago.

  8. What a great move to ensure Chavez stays in power. Just at the point when the opposition seem to be shaping the political debate, the US presents a golden PR egg to Chavez . Cue tactics del Havana to shift attention from mere domestic issues- “the US sanctions are to blame for all our ills” etc.
